The Concerto evoked the BBC to commission Lord to write another one, which he did. It was first performed by Deep Purple and the Light Music Society (with Malcolm Arnold again as the conductor) at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 17 September 1970. The individual movements of the Gemini Suite are slightly based on the personalities of Deep Purple. It was later re-recorded in the studio (see below) with a slight change in musicians (and musical arrangement).
